Cheaper parking charges in Christchurch

A Battle for cheaper parking charges in Christchurch proved victorious as councillors unanimously threw their support behind the scheme.

Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce has been campaigning since last year for £1 for two hours of parking in town centre car parks.

But a previous attempt to persuade the council to adopt the popular measure was unsuccessful last year, when councillors on the resources committee expressed concern about loss of revenue and said it wasn’t the right time for the scheme.

However, after since working with the Chamber on a way to reduce the possible fall in income, council proposals for a number of changes to fees, including the £1 for two hours scheme, were given the go-ahead at a meeting of the resources committee.

The plans will now be sent out to consultation and, if approved, will come into effect in April 2014.
