Christmas Lights switch on

Hundreds of people gathered in the Square to welcome in the festive season at the annual Christmas lights switch-on.

EastEnders actor Scott Maslen and 1970s entertainer Bobby Crush, who are starring in the pantomime Aladdin at the Pavilion, started the countdown just before 5pm on Sunday following two hours of music from local bands.

A great cheer went up as the lights spread through the Lower Gardens and a brief but dazzling firework display lit up the stage and the crowd of around 1,500 packing the Square and nearby roads.

After the fireworks some spectators made a beeline for the celebs, who stayed for a few photos afterwards, while others went into the gardens to check out the lights, visit Santa, enjoy Christmassy treats and test their balance on the ice rink.
